Since this was our last full day in Rome, we decided to head towards Vatican City. After crossing a bridge, we made our way down the steps to follow the Tiber because Zoe wanted to explore closer to the water. Approaching the Vatican, we stopped just out of smoting range, for Cheryl's protection, before deciding that the view from the gates would suffice.
From there we decided we would head out to try some very highly recommended pizza from Bonci. Zoe had to make a stop along the way for some gelato and a bathroom break, which was great because it took an hour to get our food. That being said, it was totally worth the wait! The pizza was amazing and the deep fried pasta balls were bizarre and delicious. While Cheryl was waiting, Zoe and I bought from fresh fruit and vegetables so that she would have something to eat.
After a late lunch, we decided to make our way home. As we were about to cross the river, we passed Castle San Angelo and decided to make a stop. This being my first castle, I wasn't sure what to expect. Once inside, it was deceptively tall and appeared to be a good place to hold up should an invading army want to start some trouble. We could even see the path that lead from Vatican City into the castle which, in years past, the Pope used to escape to safety. It also had a small collection of arms and armor and, once at the top, you were provided a great view of the city.
A short rest at home had us hungry for dinner, so we decided to head back to Queen Bee for our last supper in Rome. When the hostess asked us if we had a reservation, the host from previous night said we didn't need one because we were his friends. We played some more of the pantomime game, with even more new cards, and ate a fantastic pizza. From there it was back to Giolitti for more gelato! (duh).
When we got back home, we had to make sure everything was packed up, since we were heading out on a train in the morning. Zoe's feet were really sore, so she asked me to rub them. It was kind of entertaining, until it wasn't.
What's that? Of course Flickr has more pictures! Be sure to check out the ones of Zoe in front of the street art and some more of the castle.
