Mermaid Parade

This weekend was Mermaid Parade. We don't have many annual events that we go to, but so far this is one of them that we all look forward to. Cheryl and I took Friday off so we could head up to New York the night before, this way it's easier to get to the parade in the morning. The day before we went to Brooklyn Bridge Park, which we went to last year. There are a lot of great places to play and it a really great place to spend the day. Here are some shots of what we did there.

There are a couple of areas with sand. One has a couple of fountains while the other has some slides and things to climb on. There is another area that is full of swings, none of which Zoe would go on. Then another area is filled with water that spays, shoots and flows all over the place. In short, there is a lot to do in a small space. After most of the play we walked along the piers to get some dinner. Along the way there were additional playgrounds, some rocks to climb on, some art to look at and an interactive fountain that left Zoe all wet.

There are a number of other pictures in the Brooklyn Bridge Park album on Flickr. Be sure to take a look. After a long day we eventually went back to the hotel where Zoe spent her first night sleeping alone in a big girl bed. She did awesome!

The next morning we woke up fairly early to head out to Coney Island for the parade. Before things got started, Zoe enjoyed doing a little stretching on the beach before mingling with some of the mermaids.

There were a lot of really cool murals all over the place. They erected concrete walls around old shipping containers that acted as food stands. Zoe was happy to pose in front of some of the murals, but not all of them.

Eventually nap time rolled around, which was good because it had just started to rain. After a little rocking, Zoe was fast asleep in her stroller. While she slept Cheryl and I did a little shopping. When she woke up Zoe was a little cold, but that wasn't a big problem. She just rode on my shoulders wrapped in a blanket until she was fully awake.

Zoe even managed to pull it together enough to ride a few of the rides. Not many, because she's a bit of a wimp, but she did go on the Circus Train twice. Overall it was a lot of fun and I can't wait to go back again next year. There are more pictures in the Mermaid Parade album on Flickr for you to enjoy.

Paris - Day Five: Louvre, More Gardens, Photobooths, Macaroons, Love

Today was scheduled to be a somewhat random day. We didn't have anything specific we were planning to do, meaning no pre-purchased tickets, but a number of stops to make and things to see. The first stop on our list for the day was a photobooth that was out near Moulin Rouge. It was in a giant, open gallery space where there were people dancing and vendors selling food. We found the booth and took a few pictures. Right near the booth there was an old trailer of some sort that was converted in to a little library. Since Zoe loves books, even if they're in a language she doesn't read, she went in and browsed the selection. She then said she'd like one of these for our house back home. We'll see what we can do. She didn't actually take the book with us, but she wanted to pose with it. At this point it was time to get something to eat, so we hopped on the Metro and took it to Cafe des 2 Moulins, the restaurant from the movie Amelie. The food was great, the...

Girls Night Out Dance

Zoe has her first dance at school, the Girls Night Out Dance, where she brought me as her date. It had been quite some time since I was at such a formal affair, but thankfully I was still able to squeeze in to my suit. Zoe looked as gorgeous as her mother with her fancy clothes, her makeup, and the big bow in her hair. We took a few pictures before we left for the dance, just to capture the moment. I drove us over to the school, and we arrived right on time, beating the crowd. A few of Zoe's friends were there, and before they turned the lights off, I took one, not-so-good, picture. It is nice to know that, as time goes by, some things never change. There was very little dancing for the two of us at the dance. She was very interested in the snacks (treats), the lights that were on the tables, but mostly in the pull up bar at the back of the gym. She spent a solid 15 minutes moving around gym mats so she could stand on them and hang from the bar. Other kids came and went,...

Paris - Day One: Airline Trouble, Eiffel Tower, Metro

We woke up Monday morning to find out that our flight from Newark to Paris had been cancelled, but we were rebooked to fly out the next day on the same flight. Cheryl worked her magic and we transferred to a new flight out of JFK, through London, to Paris with a minimal delay in the timing. With that out of the way, we packed in to the car, made it to JFK and waited for our plane to take off. Fortunately there was plenty of entertainment in the airport, and some sleep on the plane. Unfortunately, when we finally got to Paris, Zoe's bag was missing. Apparently it didn't make the connection. She took the news fairly well. The airline personnel assured us that the bag was on its way and would be delivered to us by 2, 3 at the latest. With that we hopped in a cab to our apartment, which was located in the 10th Arrondissement of Paris. Since it was now Tuesday, thanks to the time change and length of the flight, we wanted to make the most of it, so we set out for the Eiffel...
