A Proposal of Marriage

A princess always has to look her best.

For Zoe, this meant wearing all of her finery. As a base, she was wearing her Hello Kitty dress. This is a shirt with short, ruffled sleeves, the word CUTE on the top and a hot pink tulle skirt on the bottom. On her feet she is wearing her translucent purple Ariel princess high heels. Around her neck are two plastic bead necklaces, one pink, one purple, as well as a pair of blue and pink plastic binoculars. On her head she is wearing a headband of golden hair, as well as a blue pointed tiara with Elsa featured prominently in the center.

In this outfit she stands at the top of the rear staircase of our home asking in her sad voice for me to carry her. Scooping her up in my right arm I explain as we descend that until she is too big or my back finally gives out, I will always carry her. When I place her feet on the kitchen floor with a loud plastic clack I ask her if she will carry me once she is big enough.

"Of course!" she replies.

At some point after this she is back in my arms and she turns to me and asks, "Will you marry me?" Having never been proposed to before, I'm not quite sure what to say except, "Yes." It was an incredibly flattering moment and if my wits had been intact, I would have taken a picture of how awesome she looked.

After the proposal we went to the Penn bookstore to, as she put it, "Buy daddy a present, like a Star Wars book." I am fairly certain that everyone who passed her, whether she was riding on my shoulders or sauntering in her plastic shoes, had a smile on their face to see this golden haired princess who wanted to marry me.

The following day when we got home she asked me if I would marry her again. How could I say no?

Paris - Day Five: Louvre, More Gardens, Photobooths, Macaroons, Love

Today was scheduled to be a somewhat random day. We didn't have anything specific we were planning to do, meaning no pre-purchased tickets, but a number of stops to make and things to see. The first stop on our list for the day was a photobooth that was out near Moulin Rouge. It was in a giant, open gallery space where there were people dancing and vendors selling food. We found the booth and took a few pictures. Right near the booth there was an old trailer of some sort that was converted in to a little library. Since Zoe loves books, even if they're in a language she doesn't read, she went in and browsed the selection. She then said she'd like one of these for our house back home. We'll see what we can do. She didn't actually take the book with us, but she wanted to pose with it. At this point it was time to get something to eat, so we hopped on the Metro and took it to Cafe des 2 Moulins, the restaurant from the movie Amelie. The food was great, the...

Girls Night Out Dance

Zoe has her first dance at school, the Girls Night Out Dance, where she brought me as her date. It had been quite some time since I was at such a formal affair, but thankfully I was still able to squeeze in to my suit. Zoe looked as gorgeous as her mother with her fancy clothes, her makeup, and the big bow in her hair. We took a few pictures before we left for the dance, just to capture the moment. I drove us over to the school, and we arrived right on time, beating the crowd. A few of Zoe's friends were there, and before they turned the lights off, I took one, not-so-good, picture. It is nice to know that, as time goes by, some things never change. There was very little dancing for the two of us at the dance. She was very interested in the snacks (treats), the lights that were on the tables, but mostly in the pull up bar at the back of the gym. She spent a solid 15 minutes moving around gym mats so she could stand on them and hang from the bar. Other kids came and went,...

Paris - Day One: Airline Trouble, Eiffel Tower, Metro

We woke up Monday morning to find out that our flight from Newark to Paris had been cancelled, but we were rebooked to fly out the next day on the same flight. Cheryl worked her magic and we transferred to a new flight out of JFK, through London, to Paris with a minimal delay in the timing. With that out of the way, we packed in to the car, made it to JFK and waited for our plane to take off. Fortunately there was plenty of entertainment in the airport, and some sleep on the plane. Unfortunately, when we finally got to Paris, Zoe's bag was missing. Apparently it didn't make the connection. She took the news fairly well. The airline personnel assured us that the bag was on its way and would be delivered to us by 2, 3 at the latest. With that we hopped in a cab to our apartment, which was located in the 10th Arrondissement of Paris. Since it was now Tuesday, thanks to the time change and length of the flight, we wanted to make the most of it, so we set out for the Eiffel...
