What You Talking About Zoe?

For a while now, Zoe has used several words in rotation. It's hard to say when or what her first word was, but somewhere around 12 months she seemed to be saying "ball" and "cat" regularly. Cat was most likely her first word. At least it was the first word caught on film.

We should probably take a moment here to recall the progression of what she calls us. It started out normally with "mama" and "dada". Then progressed to "mommy," but it took a strange turn before it made its way to "daddy". There were several steps before that one. In no particular order, they were "da-mommy", "dummy" and "bummy". My personal favorite was when she would call me "dadadadadadada", but that didn't last very long. Today we're just mommy and daddy.

Over the past couple of weeks, Zoe has been mimicking words we say, but just this past weekend she seemed to develop a whole set of words. For instance, Zoe uses "ah-tee" for anything that is hot, especially food. This accompanies a little waving of her hand to show that it should not be touched. She seems to finally use "no", especially when asked to try new food. When it comes to food and drink, she can say "apple", "cookie", "water" and "more". Her favorite color must be purple, because whenever asked what color something is, the answer is always "purple". In terms of her toys, she is very fond of her "baby" who she tucks in, unsolicited, every night. Other words from her daily life are "wet", "chalk", "poop" (pronounced pup), "pee pee", "boobies", "hi" and "bye" (both hi and bye are said with drawn out e sounds at the end).

This morning Zoe said her first sentence, "It's stuck". She was rather annoyed at the chalk that has two different colors on one stick. When she attempted to pull them apart, and they wouldn't budge, she said, "It's stuck". She then went on to repeat this with the stubborn soda cans which would not come out of their box.

In regards to names, right now she only now Issac as "I-zee" and Mimi as "Mimi". We're working on Nana, Poppy and Joe Pop, but it's slow going.

UPDATE: There are several words we forgot. In no particular order they are "book", "button/bunny", "bus", "knock" and "bird". If we remember any more that she has been saying, I'll be sure to add those here too.

  1. She does make a very compelling argument! She should write the next Golden Rollers cheer.

Paris - Day Five: Louvre, More Gardens, Photobooths, Macaroons, Love

Today was scheduled to be a somewhat random day. We didn't have anything specific we were planning to do, meaning no pre-purchased tickets, but a number of stops to make and things to see. The first stop on our list for the day was a photobooth that was out near Moulin Rouge. It was in a giant, open gallery space where there were people dancing and vendors selling food. We found the booth and took a few pictures. Right near the booth there was an old trailer of some sort that was converted in to a little library. Since Zoe loves books, even if they're in a language she doesn't read, she went in and browsed the selection. She then said she'd like one of these for our house back home. We'll see what we can do. She didn't actually take the book with us, but she wanted to pose with it. At this point it was time to get something to eat, so we hopped on the Metro and took it to Cafe des 2 Moulins, the restaurant from the movie Amelie. The food was great, the...

Girls Night Out Dance

Zoe has her first dance at school, the Girls Night Out Dance, where she brought me as her date. It had been quite some time since I was at such a formal affair, but thankfully I was still able to squeeze in to my suit. Zoe looked as gorgeous as her mother with her fancy clothes, her makeup, and the big bow in her hair. We took a few pictures before we left for the dance, just to capture the moment. I drove us over to the school, and we arrived right on time, beating the crowd. A few of Zoe's friends were there, and before they turned the lights off, I took one, not-so-good, picture. It is nice to know that, as time goes by, some things never change. There was very little dancing for the two of us at the dance. She was very interested in the snacks (treats), the lights that were on the tables, but mostly in the pull up bar at the back of the gym. She spent a solid 15 minutes moving around gym mats so she could stand on them and hang from the bar. Other kids came and went,...

Election Day

When Zoe was born, Barack Obama was the president. Today the country is voting to determine who will be president for the next four years. It will still be a long time before Zoe gets to cast her own vote, but when Cheryl got home today, the two of them went around the corner to our voting center and did their civic duty. Cheryl took a couple of pictures. The girls are asleep now, and the race is still too close to call, but I assume when we get up tomorrow (hopefully not in the middle of the night) we'll know who who won. I hope everyone got out to vote today! As you can see by her sticker, Zoe did.
