Nightmares

When Zoe went to bed Sunday night, it was early. She hadn't napped that day and sometime between 6:30pm and 6:45pm she passed out on the downstairs couch laying against me. I carried her up to bed assuming that she would be up early for Cheryl, but would otherwise be fine.

At 12:45am I sprang out of bed to Zoe's cries of Daddy. She only got out two of them before I was in her room. She was very upset. She told me that there was a lizard on her wall. Trying to make sense of this, I asked her what happened. She pointed to the piggy bank on her dresser and said that it had turned in to a lizard and was climbing on the wall and it scared her. I stayed with her for fifteen minutes or so, long enough for her to pass out in my lap, and then I put her back in her crib.

Around 4:15am she called out again, this time much less urgent. She really just wanted to sit with me and eventually asked for a bottle, which I told her she couldn't have because it was the middle of the night. Shortly after that, seeing that I wasn't going to be much fun, she asked to be put back in her crib and didn't call out again.

When I picked Zoe up from school on Monday I asked her about her nightmare. She said that she had a bad dream. That her pig had turned in to a lizard. The lizard had a spoon and was trying to feed her something she didn't want. At this point I wasn't convinced that it was an actual lizard, so I asked her if it was a lizard like the Lizard of Oz. She said no, it was a lizard like from Toy Story of Terror, so it was, in fact, a lizard, not a wizard. She went on to say that after her bad dream she wrapped herself in her blanket and had a good dream. When I asked her what that one was about she said Twinkle Twinkle.

Cheryl put Zoe to bed on Monday night and shortly thereafter she cried out for daddy. When I went up there she was very upset, again about the pig that was going to turn in to a lizard, so I took it out of her room. Laying on my lap, her eyes kept opening and her head turning to the dresser, waiting for the lizard and his spoon. I held her head, she held my arm with both hands and eventually passed out to my gentle shushing. When I got up this morning, she had not called out. We'll see how tonight goes.

Comments

  1. hmm... my comments won't post? I tried to post a comment about also having weird dreams. You are a great dad to be there in the middle of the night and then also talk to her about it afterwards.

Election Day

When Zoe was born, Barack Obama was the president. Today the country is voting to determine who will be president for the next four years. It will still be a long time before Zoe gets to cast her own vote, but when Cheryl got home today, the two of them went around the corner to our voting center and did their civic duty. Cheryl took a couple of pictures. The girls are asleep now, and the race is still too close to call, but I assume when we get up tomorrow (hopefully not in the middle of the night) we'll know who who won. I hope everyone got out to vote today! As you can see by her sticker, Zoe did.

Riding Together for the First Time

Today my bike was finally fixed, so I picked it up from the shop before picking Zoe up from Science Club. When she saw my bike she was very excited to go for a ride. It was overcast all day, but the weather held out and it was a beautiful evening, so we rushed home, she finished all her homework, and I loaded her bike onto the car. I packed a bag with some water and a couple snacks and we made our way to Lorimer Park. Before we took off down the trail, I wanted to take a selfie, but I was so excited that I forgot my helmet, so there are two selfies. As soon as I finished the picture she took off down the path. Fortunately I was able to catch up, phone in hand, to take a few pictures as we cruised down the trail. I am a mostly competent bike rider, but trying to pay attention to her, and the trail, and keep myself upright while holding my phone was tricky. So, I decided to take some video where, for the most part, I could rest my hand on the handlebars. She is so good a...

Visit from Nana and Poppy

To make sure she didn't forget about her parent's birthday's, Cheryl gave them their presents on the day of the baby shower. For her father, she got a nice webcam so that we could Skype with them to interact with Zoe. A few weeks ago we had done that for the first time and it actually worked out really well. So on Monday, April 2nd, Cheryl's parents came up from Florida to meet Zoe face to face for the first time. On one day Cheryl and Zoe went to Clark Park with Nana and Poppy. Later in the week Cheryl's sister Debbie came by with her daughters, Zoe's cousins, Ashlee and Taylor. Just before they left, Cheryl remembered to take a picture. Here's Zoe with her cousin Taylor. As always, you can find all of these pictures and more in Zoe's Set on Flickr.
