Italy - Day 1 - Getting to Rome

Our flight to Rome was scheduled for 11:00pm on Sunday, May 26th. Since that gave us a lot of time before we had to leave, Zoe and I went to Lorimer Park for a bike ride. We rode the Pennypack Trail all the way from Moredon Road to Welsh Road, which is about 1.7 miles. When we got to the end we turned around to head home. After about 100 feet Zoe's front wheel turned 90 degrees, her bike feel to the left, and she skidded to a stop on her hands and knee. She was really upset, but not that hurt. I sat her on my bike, telling her to hold onto my shoulder, while I walked two bikes and a bruised kid back to the car. She cried for the first quarter mile, but then I made some comment about a raccoon verbally harassing me on the trail and she started to laugh.

When we got home Cheryl cleaned out the wound and she was okay to go.

At our gate in Newark Airport, Zoe met a 6 year old girl named Alysa who was also going to Italy on the same flight. The two of them played for a bit until Zoe decided she was tired and wanted to lay down. Ono the way back to the gate from a bathroom break Zoe danced to Old Town Road in front of a number of passengers waiting for their flights. The flight was delayed about an hour, and 20 minutes before boarding Zoe fell asleep on my lap. Thankfully, once we got on the plane, we all settled in and were fast asleep on our way to Rome.

We arrived at the Rome airport around 2:30pm the next day where there was a light rain falling. Grabbing our one checked bag, we hopped in a cab to our apartment. The drive took us past the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, a number of old buildings, and through a lot of tight, winding streets.

Checking into the apartment was quick, even with Zoe jumping around in the courtyard, so we decided to head right back out to start exploring. We made our way south to nearby Piazza Navona to soak in some of the many fountains the city has to offer.

The day was getting late, so we picked one of the restaurants on the square and sat down for a meal. We ordered some food and drinks, which were delicious. Now I know this part is going to be hard to believe, but Zoe actually took a bite of pizza! She said she liked it, but never went back for another bite. She did, however, eat most of her strawberry gelato.

When the meal was finished, we made our way home to call it a day. We were in Rome and the adventure was about to begin. Check out Flickr to see more pictures from our travels.

Meet the Flintstones?!?

Cheryl wanted me to share the following with everyone. These are her words, not mine. Frankly, I know I'm the lucky one. So obviously the blog is Michael's thing, which is great really because if it were up to me it would have started and ended with 99 days left! But I wanted to make a post so I could thank Michael for everything he has done for me throughout this pregnancy and most of all during delivery. There is no question that being with Michael is the smartest thing I've ever done and Zoe is lucky to call him Dad. The reason we had a planned c-section was that Zoe was 'unstable lie'. In the 4 weeks before she was due she was breech, head down, breech, and then head down again. As it was explained to us, this is pretty rare. They expected that even if she was in the right position when I went into labor, she would turn during contractions creating a dangerous situation for all of us. The day of surgery I was still pretty calm. Once I was prepp...

Zoe Ninja Warrior

In looking for something to do over the weekend, Cheryl found a gym nearby that has Ninja Warrior equipment and allows children Zoe's age. They had an open drop in time on Sunday from 4:45pm to 7:15pm. To prepare for her day, Zoe put on her exercise outfit, added some body glitter on her shoulders and then used markers to make some tattoos. She looked especially cute and tough. Once we got in, she was all over the place: running up the wrapped wall, swinging on the ropes and rings, jumping on the trampoline. She tried so many times to get up that wall. As soon as the boy in front of her got up it, she was up on her next run. That's a 10 foot wall. Two and a half times her height, and was right up it. She was so excited to get up that thing. Cheryl and I even got in on the action, trying out the different equipment. Here she is, looking amazing at the apex of a bounce on the big trampoline. Zoe was also all over the gymnastics equipment. She really enjoyed sw...

She Poops Because She Cares

One week ago today, Zoe was born. She seems to have adjusted to life in West Philly fairly well. Her pink blanket is one of her favorites to snuggle up with; however, we did learn that much like her father, she hates to bathe. So her first appointment with the peditrician was Wednesday at 11:00am. She seemed to enjoy her ride in the car again, and by that I mean she was passed out the whole way there. The doctor said she was looking good. The jaundice that she had in the hospital is no longer a concern now that she's eating and going to the bathroom regularly. Also, she's working her way back up to her birth weight. After being born at 8lbs 8ozs, she dropped down to 7lbs 13ozs when she was discharged from the hospital. At her appointment she weighed in at 8lbs 3ozs. Later in the day while I was out shopping for essentials (and comic books) Zoe was getting fussy with her mother. We're not entirely sure what the issue was, but we did find out that she loves her swing....
