Paris - Day Two: Catacombs, Luxembourg Gardens, Triumphal Arch, Our Apartment

One of the first things we were supposed to do today was visit the Catacombs; however, there was a workers' strike, so we weren't able to go. Thankfully, we were still able to have a very full day. It started with a trip to Pancake Sisters to get some breakfast. The menu was short, but it had some interesting and delicious selections.

After that we hopped on the Metro and made our way to the Luxembourg Gardens. Zoe was enamored with the fish, marveling at how they were jumping out of the water, and then took some time to pose in front of the statues.

The next stop on the map was to the boats. There is an area next to the palace where you can rent a small sailboat for 30 minutes and watch it get blown around. This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

It was great to watch Zoe run from one side to the other to get the boat and push it back in to the breeze. Once the sailing was done, we made our way to a large play area where you had to pay to get in, but it was definitely worth the price of admission. They had all sorts of things to climb on and spin around in, but by far, the biggest attraction was the zip line. It was an oblong track with three rubber coated chains with seats on them. Kids would climb on a platform, bring the chain to the end, and then gradually descend around the track. Here is one of the hundred rides Zoe took on it, as well as a number of other implements.

After a while we had to drag Zoe away so we could continue exploring the city. We jumped on the Metro and made our way to the Arc de Triomphe. Along the way, we picked up some macaroons, which were also a big hit.

Once we were done there, we took one last Metro ride back to our apartment. The door isn't much to look at, and there are a lot of steps to get there, it was on the 4th floor, but once you got inside there was a kitchen, bathroom, dining room, living room complete with bed nook, and bedroom. Here are some pictures for you to get an idea of where we slept.

And I had no idea they were going to personalize the front door for me. :) So that was the second day in Paris. You can see all of the pictures from this day on Flickr, but there's more to follow.

Girls Night Out Dance

Zoe has her first dance at school, the Girls Night Out Dance, where she brought me as her date. It had been quite some time since I was at such a formal affair, but thankfully I was still able to squeeze in to my suit. Zoe looked as gorgeous as her mother with her fancy clothes, her makeup, and the big bow in her hair. We took a few pictures before we left for the dance, just to capture the moment. I drove us over to the school, and we arrived right on time, beating the crowd. A few of Zoe's friends were there, and before they turned the lights off, I took one, not-so-good, picture. It is nice to know that, as time goes by, some things never change. There was very little dancing for the two of us at the dance. She was very interested in the snacks (treats), the lights that were on the tables, but mostly in the pull up bar at the back of the gym. She spent a solid 15 minutes moving around gym mats so she could stand on them and hang from the bar. Other kids came and went,...

Italy - Day 6 - Rome

Since this was our last full day in Rome, we decided to head towards Vatican City. After crossing a bridge, we made our way down the steps to follow the Tiber because Zoe wanted to explore closer to the water. Approaching the Vatican, we stopped just out of smoting range, for Cheryl's protection, before deciding that the view from the gates would suffice. From there we decided we would head out to try some very highly recommended pizza from Bonci. Zoe had to make a stop along the way for some gelato and a bathroom break, which was great because it took an hour to get our food. That being said, it was totally worth the wait! The pizza was amazing and the deep fried pasta balls were bizarre and delicious. While Cheryl was waiting, Zoe and I bought from fresh fruit and vegetables so that she would have something to eat. After a late lunch, we decided to make our way home. As we were about to cross the river, we passed Castle San Angelo and decided to make a stop. Thi...

Election Day

When Zoe was born, Barack Obama was the president. Today the country is voting to determine who will be president for the next four years. It will still be a long time before Zoe gets to cast her own vote, but when Cheryl got home today, the two of them went around the corner to our voting center and did their civic duty. Cheryl took a couple of pictures. The girls are asleep now, and the race is still too close to call, but I assume when we get up tomorrow (hopefully not in the middle of the night) we'll know who who won. I hope everyone got out to vote today! As you can see by her sticker, Zoe did.
